Karibuni! (Welcome)
The Story of Meru Peak
The idea for Meru Peak Day School was institutionalized by
an amazing man named Baba Juma who resides in Tangeru
Village, Tanzania. Within his village the need for change was
painfully apparent in the accumulation of children that would
run the streets unsupervised an unschooled each day. These
children were too young and poor to attend school that
would not discriminate against these children and allow them
the chance for a better future. This idea was met with support
from his friends, family, and community, allowing for ground
to be broken on what would be known as Meru Peak Day
School. The result of all their hard work unveiled a lovely
three room school house where children ages three to seven
year olds can come and begin their learning experience. All
of the lessons and most of the instructions are taught in English.
This English based curicullum was a courageous move by Baba
Juma because traditionally in Tanzania English is not introduced
until secondary school. Introducing these children to English
earlier in their learning careers allows them a better chance to
excel rather thanfall behind as they progress in there education
level. Along with this daring idea came a great need for help.
Cross Cultural Solutions is international volunteer agency that
has a base in Tengeru. They provide volunteers who come to
Meru Peak every day and help teach the classes that are so
crucial to the development of these children. Since Meru Peak
is not dictated by the traditional guidelines they are free to
create a learning friendly environment that promotes greatness.
The children’s reactions to have been a resounding cheer for
knowledge. Once again with this great accomplishment another
great need has been created. At the top of the class there are
gifted four year olds working on long division. The potential for
all the students at Meru Peak Day School is immeasurable.
The only thing that hinders the promising future for these
children is a lack of the most essential components; food,
clean water, pencil and paper for everyone in class and hope
for something better. Meru Peak Day School is a beacon of
hope for all those who are involved in its ambitious betterment
of the Tanzanian youth and future. The students are
malnourished and are in dire need of assistance. The tradition
of this learning institution will endure and the students will
succeed as long as some financial obligations can be met.
